Sound Design and Attributions
I'd like to mainly use this post to hold my sound attributions, but I'll also briefly discuss my thought behind the game's sound design.
----------
I wanted the sound design for this game to be very simple. There would only be background music and some simple SFX to give user-feedback when interacting with game components.
I chose to use typewriter sounds for some of the button "clicks" to complement the newspaper theming of the in-class game. One of the characters is a typesetter, some are newspaper editors or censors, and the rest are writers. Publishing one's writing is the central gameplay element of that version.
I knew I would use music composed in late 19th century Russia in the background, and the songs I sampled from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsk (who most famously composed "The Nutcracker") ended up working well. They are pleasant to listen to and set the tone of the game without distracting players from reading the dialogue.
I am very grateful for the help of August Stromberger in recording the voice acting. We are both fans of popular role-playing video games where all NPCs have a short line of dialogue or a grunt when you first interact with them. I wanted to use this popular convention in my game, too. To avoid fake Russian accents, August and I recorded ourselves making various "hmm" noises to sound as if someone had just politely gotten our attention in conversation.
